The kW to BHP Formula

bhp = kW × 1.34102

"Brake" refers to the dynamometer brake used to load the engine, not to a different unit.

Brake horsepower uses exactly the same constant as mechanical horsepower. The word "brake" is about the measurement method: the engine is loaded by a brake until it holds a steady speed, and the restraining torque is measured.

Crank Power vs Wheel Power

Gearbox, differential, driveshafts and bearings all absorb part of the engine output. The remainder reaches the road, and that is what a rolling road actually measures.

Losses are not a fixed percentage

Drivetrain drag is closer to a fixed torque than a fixed fraction, so the percentage falls as power rises. Treat any single figure as an approximation.

Engine Dyno, Hub Dyno and Rolling Road

Engine dyno

Engine out of the car, coupled directly to a brake. Measures true crank output with no drivetrain in the way.

Hub dyno

Wheels removed, hubs coupled to the load. Removes tyre losses and slip, but keeps the drivetrain.

Rolling road

Car drives onto rollers. Convenient and repeatable, but includes tyre deformation and slip.

Numbers from the three methods are not interchangeable. Comparing a rolling-road figure with a manufacturer crank figure without accounting for the difference is the single most common mistake in this area.

Why Two Dyno Runs Never Agree

Air density changes with temperature, pressure and humidity, and engine output follows it. Standards exist precisely so figures can be compared across days and sites.

StandardReference conditionsNotes
SAE J134925 °C, 990 mbar dryCommon US automotive standard
DIN 7002020 °C, 1013 mbarHistoric European standard, slightly optimistic

ISO 158525 °C, 990 mbarWidely used internationally
Before comparing two figures
  • Same measurement point: crank, hub or roller.
  • Same correction standard applied to both.
  • Similar ambient temperature and pressure.
  • Same fuel grade and engine temperature.
  • Same accessories connected — alternator load alone can be several horsepower.

Note: Drivetrain loss is an estimate; measured losses vary with gear, temperature and tyre pressure.

Wheel Power Across the Whole Range

Because the loss is applied as a percentage, wheel power tracks crank power in a straight line. Real drivetrains deviate slightly, with proportionally higher losses at low power.

kW to BHP Questions

Common questions about converting kw to bhp.

The unit is the same. "Brake" describes how it is measured — at the crankshaft on a dynamometer — rather than a different definition.

Multiply by 1.34102: bhp = kW × 1.34102. So 150 kW is about 201 bhp.

Brake horsepower is measured at the crank; wheel horsepower is what remains after drivetrain losses, typically 10–25% lower.

Roughly 10–15% for front-wheel drive, around 15% for rear-wheel drive, and 20–25% for all-wheel drive.

Rolling roads measure wheel power. Add back the drivetrain loss before comparing with a manufacturer crank figure.

Air temperature, pressure and humidity all change engine output. Correction standards such as SAE J1349 exist to normalise the results.
