The kW to GJ Formula

GJ = kW × hours × 0.0036

One kilowatt-hour is 3.6 megajoules, which is 0.0036 gigajoules.

  1. Multiply power by hours to get kilowatt-hours.
  2. Multiply by 3.6 to reach megajoules.
  3. Divide by 1,000 for gigajoules — or just use the 0.0036 constant in one step.

A 500 kW boiler running for 10 hours delivers 18 GJ of heat, which is the same as 5,000 kWh.

Who Actually Bills in Gigajoules

Canadian gas

Natural gas is billed per GJ across most Canadian provinces.

District heating

Heat networks across Europe meter delivered heat in GJ or MWh.

Process industry

Steam and process heat balances are routinely kept in GJ.

Carbon reporting

Many national inventories express fuel energy in GJ or TJ.

The split is essentially historical: electricity grew up with the kilowatt-hour, while fuels and heat inherited the joule from thermodynamics.

Comparing a GJ Price With a kWh Tariff

Comparing heating options honestly means putting gas, electricity and heat network prices into the same unit — and then correcting for efficiency, which is where most comparisons fall down.

  1. Convert to a common unit

Divide any price per GJ by 277.8 to get the equivalent price per kWh.

  2. Correct for efficiency

A 90% efficient boiler delivers 0.9 kWh of heat per kWh of gas. A heat pump with a COP of 3 delivers 3 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity.

  3. Compare delivered heat

Only after both corrections are the numbers genuinely comparable.

Gas at 12 per GJ vs electricity at 0.15 per kWh

Given
  • Gas: 12 per GJ
  • Boiler efficiency: 90%
  • Heat pump COP: 3.0
Working
  1. Gas = 12 ÷ 277.8 = 0.0432 per kWh
  2. Delivered heat from gas = 0.0432 ÷ 0.9 = 0.048
  3. Delivered heat from heat pump = 0.15 ÷ 3 = 0.050

Almost identical cost per unit of delivered heat — the raw tariffs suggested a threefold difference.

Reading a District Heating Bill

Delivered heat (GJ)
Metered at the heat interface unit — flow rate multiplied by temperature difference, integrated over time.
Capacity charge
A standing charge based on your connection size in kW, not on what you use.
Return temperature
Many networks penalise a high return temperature because it reduces the efficiency of the whole system.
Checking a heat bill
  • Confirm whether the tariff is per GJ or per MWh — they differ by a factor of 3.6.
  • Check the capacity charge against your actual peak demand.
  • Compare delivered GJ against degree days for the period.
  • Look for a return temperature penalty and whether your system triggers it.
  • Verify meter readings rather than accepting estimates.

kW to GJ Questions

Common questions about converting kw to gj.

0.0036 GJ, or 3.6 MJ. Going the other way, 1 GJ is 277.8 kWh.

Multiply power by hours and then by 0.0036: GJ = kW × hours × 0.0036.

Gas is sold by energy content rather than volume, and the gigajoule is the SI-based unit many utilities and district heating networks use.

Divide the price per GJ by 277.8 to get the equivalent price per kWh, then correct both for the efficiency of the appliance.

No. A gigawatt-hour is 3,600 GJ — three orders of magnitude larger.

A typical European home uses roughly 40–80 GJ a year for space heating and hot water, depending on climate and insulation.
