The kW to HP Formula

hp = kW × 1.34102

Mechanical horsepower, defined as 745.6999 W.

PS = kW × 1.35962

Metric horsepower, defined as 735.49875 W.

The two definitions differ by about 1.4%, which is why the same engine is quoted slightly differently in different markets. Neither is more correct — they are simply two historical conventions for the same idea.

Mechanical hp, Metric PS and Boiler hp

UnitExact valueWhere you meet it
Mechanical hp745.700 WUK and US vehicles, pumps, compressors
Metric hp (PS, CV, pk)735.499 WContinental Europe, Japan, Korea

Boiler hp9,809.5 WSteam boiler ratings — a completely different quantity

Boiler horsepower is a heat rate, not a mechanical output. Never convert it with the 1.341 factor.

A 100 kW engine is 134 hp or 136 PS. On a brochure that difference is marketing; on a specification it is a discrepancy someone will eventually query.

Why IEC and NEMA Sizes Never Quite Match

IEC motors are built to a kilowatt series and NEMA motors to a horsepower series. The two ladders were never aligned, so equivalents are always approximate.

Always size up

When replacing a motor across the two standards, take the next size up. A 200 hp NEMA motor is slightly smaller than a 160 kW IEC one.

Nameplate Power Is Output, Not Input

A motor nameplate states mechanical output at the shaft. The electrical input is higher, by the efficiency, and higher again in apparent power terms because of the power factor.

Input kW = output kW ÷ efficiency

IE3 motors above 10 kW typically reach 92–95% efficiency.

A 75 kW IE3 motor at full load

Given
  • Shaft output: 75 kW (100.6 hp)
  • Efficiency: 95%
  • Power factor: 0.87
Working
  1. Input real power = 75 ÷ 0.95 = 78.9 kW
  2. Apparent power = 78.9 ÷ 0.87 = 90.7 kVA

The supply must provide 90.7 kVA to get 75 kW — about 131 A at 400 V three phase.

Where Your Rating Falls in the Motor Range

Fractional (under 1 hp)

Fans, pumps and small drives. Often single phase with a start capacitor.

Integral (1–200 hp)

The bulk of industrial motors: conveyors, compressors, process pumps.

Large (200 hp and up)

Usually medium voltage, with dedicated starting equipment and protection.

Where Horsepower Conversions Go Wrong

Mixing hp and PS

A 1.4% discrepancy looks like a measurement error and gets chased for hours.

Using boiler horsepower

Boiler hp is 9.81 kW, not 0.746 kW. Converting it as mechanical hp is out by a factor of thirteen.

Confusing input and output

Nameplate hp is shaft output. The electrical supply must deliver more.

kW to HP Questions

Common questions about converting kw to hp.

1 kW is 1.341 mechanical horsepower, or 1.360 metric PS.

Multiply by 1.34102 for mechanical horsepower, or by 1.35962 for metric PS.

About 74.6 kW. Divide horsepower by 1.34102 to reach kilowatts.

Mechanical hp is 745.7 W and metric PS is 735.5 W, so PS figures are around 1.4% higher for the same engine.

IEC uses a kilowatt series and NEMA a horsepower series, so ratings land on slightly different numbers. Always size up to the next standard frame.

No. One boiler horsepower is 9.81 kW — a heat rate, not a mechanical output. It must never be converted with the 1.341 factor.

No. It is the mechanical output at the shaft. Electrical input is higher by the motor efficiency, typically 3–8% more.
